Natalie Hogan

Laboratory Assistant
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
Majors: Neuroscience/Biology with minor in Leadership and Premed concentration
Other interests: Traveling, crafty projects, running, taking pictures, cooking, being a part of many organizations on campus, camping, being goofy with friends, and dancing like nobody’s watching!
Goals: I hope to be accepted into medical school, specialize in neurosurgery, and eventually work for a teaching hospital with new residents.
How I got involved working in the lab: My first visit to B-W happened when I was in high school. Dr. Mickley scheduled a personal meeting to hype the neuroscience program at Baldwin-Wallace and immediately sold me! After meeting the lab assistants and hearing about the experiments on learning and memory that were in progress, I asked about getting an internship in the lab.
How I think the lab is helping me obtain my long-term goals: My duties in the lab range from recording data and helping with assays to cleaning out the fridge and performing perfusions. There is always mounting and slicing to be done, but health checks are probably the most important job. I enjoy the weekly lab meetings to get updated on experiments and discuss journal club articles. However, the other lab assistants/directors are really what make me keep coming back each day to work since we have such great “chemistry” – pun intended…
I’ve learned so much information about lab procedures, assay/slide preparation, brain anatomy and function, current neuroscience events, protocols, and ethics. My time at the lab is always educational but fun at the same time. Personally, I have realized that I prefer hands-on work rather than data-rich research and used this to outline my plan for the rest of my neuroscience career. I have also developed valuable connections in the neuroscience world that will help me establish myself down the road. Dr. Mickley runs a very professional lab and is always extremely helpful in problem-solving which are aspects that will act as foundations for future lab positions.
