LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Beverly Jerold

Letter from Beverly Jerold

On the basis of a remark in the 1802 Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, my BACH article, "Fasch and the Beginning of Modern Artistic Choral Singing," 35/1 (2004), 61-86,  mentioned that the famed soprano Gertrud Schmeling Mara had studied with Johann Adam Hiller in Leipzig. Recently, however, I encountered contradictory information in Mara’s autobiography, which states that in 1766 she was engaged as the principal female concert soloist in Leipzig with a salary of 600 Rth., one "very high for a young girl."
