Focus Festival 2004 - Krystof Penderecki
Krzysztof Penderecki's Remarks
Students in the Conservatory of Music enjoyed a rare opportunity to work closely with world renowned composer, Krzysztof Penderecki, as he rehearsed his compositions as featured composer for B-W's biennial FOCUS Festival of Contemporary Music.
The two-concert festival featured his works and the Polish composer received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the College. B-W was his only stop on this rare visit to the United States, a fact that drew contemporary music lovers to Berea from throughout the area.
"Those of us who are musicians owe everything to composers, " said Professor Dwight Oltman conductor of B-W's orchestra and symphonic wind ensemble.
"They create the blueprints for our musical activity. When students have an opportunity to interact with a world-class composer, it is an incredible experience. I am sure that playing under the baton of Krzysztof Penderecki will be one if the memorable events that our students remember for a lifetime."
Described as "One of the giants of Western civilization in the later part of the 20th century," Penderecki has been honored, not only by his native Poland, but also Italy, Germany, France, Monaco, Ireland and the U.S. as well. He has won a Grammy, an Emmy and, in 2000 received the Cannes Classical Award as "Living Composer of the Year." His works span the gamut from opera, to symphony, to chamber works.
2004 Event Description
