Featured Student: Justin Apger
Justin Apger was chosen as one of B-W’s Outstanding Seniors in Spring 2005. He was an International Studies major from Galion, Ohio. Active in the Office of Community Outreach, he was the program director for Youth Challenge and worked for the AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland. He also served as a Greek Life and Orientation leader and participated in the Discovery China program his sophomore year.
Quoting from Justin’s nomination for the award shows what kind of student he was: “Justin has excelled in all the areas which produce an Outstanding Senior. He maintains a very high grade point average with a major and two minors while balancing extracurricular activities. He has received numerous academic honors including membership in the Laurels Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Freshman Honor Society, Dean’s List and several prestigious scholarships. Justin has extended himself beyond traditional learning by participating in study abroad experiences, service-learning, internships and OCO’s summer urban experience at the Archwood House. Justin is the epitome of what we hope our students will become….contributing, compassionate citizens in an increasingly global society. He has demonstrated commitment and passion for diversity, service and social justice issues through several endeavors. These include designing an alternative spring break experience focusing on Hispanic culture, serving at a Hispanic community center and the Gay and Lesbian Center during the summer of 2004, and serving as the Project Coordinator for our Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program in Cleveland for two years.”
“Yet, Justin is a very humble person. His numerous achievements both academically and outside the classroom could lead to a sense of superiority or elitism. Quite the contrary is true. Justin is a servant-leader, dedicated to the greater cause of humanity, genuinely concerned for the well-being of all people but especially those who are disadvantaged or marginalized.”
Justin is currently studying for a Master’s Degree at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Featured Student: Regina Wilson
Regina Wilson, an international studies and French major from Pittsburgh, spent the year after graduation teaching English in Paris. She applied through the Fulbright IIE and received a grant, which is administered by the French government. She taught English to high school students.
Upon her return from France, Regina began law studies in fall 2004 at the University of Pittsburgh where she has a full tuition scholarship. Pitt agreed to defer her tuition award for a year so that she could accept the European opportunity. Wilson plans to focus on international law.
As an undergraduate, she spent a year studying in France and also completed a summer Washington internship with Congressman William J. Coyne. As an international student ambassador, she helped B-W's international students make a smooth transition to life in the U.S. and on campus. She also was a member of Black Student Alliance and was the president of the campus Circle K organization.
