Offered during alternate Fall semesters (2003, 2005), a group of B-W students and 2 faculty/staff members travel to points of interest across the country. Participants explore various subjects, perform community service, and much more. The USA tour exposes students to the diverse people, places, and issues that shape the United States. Students earn academic credit for several courses through journal entries, readings, group projects, and analytical papers during the tour.
The Fall 2003 USA Tour attended former President Jimmy Carter's Sunday School Class (in Americus, GA). After the Sunday School lesson he took pictures with the group.
Fall 2003: Who are we as a nation?
USA Tour (Fall 2003), Who are we as a Nation, was led by Joan Scholl, Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education. The 15-week, tour traveled to all major regions in the United States (literally Maine to California and back). Through interdisciplinary examination of groups and subcultures across the U.S., this tour will attempted to understand the rich diversity that constitutes the U.S.
What types of things do students actually do on the road? Below are some examples (this is a very brief list of activities):
In Boston, students volunteer at a women's shelter, they will walk the tour of Freedom Trail and the Black Freedom Trail and tour Harvard University. In Mount Desert Maine, students will hike Cadillac Mountain and go lobster fishing. In New York City students will meet with the National Council of Churches and discuss 9/11 and its aftermath, visit the UN headquarters, as well as visit Ground Zero.
- In Augusta, GA students will visit Paine College (an historic Black College) and then travel to Americus, GA, where they will work at the Habitat for Humanity Headquarters. In Salt Lake City, UT students will visit the Church of the Latter Day Saints on Temple Square and then visit the CLDS community outreach organizations and then BYU. In San Francisco students will visit Muir Woods, visit churches and learn about the GLBT community.
- In Los Angeles students will visit a Hispanic community and visit the Crystal Cathedral. Students will also attend briefings on the aftermath of the California recall election. From San Diego, students will attend a day trip to Tijuana, Mexico. Visits to the Grand Canyon and a Native American Reservation are also planned.
Students are traveling from city to city in mini-vans. It is a great opportunity to learn, see and experience "what is in your own backyard."
Students are receiving credits in Religion, Political Science, Sociology, Health and Physical Education.
Cost: Students paid Baldwin-Wallace College full-time tuition, room and board for the Fall semester, plus a program fee of $1900. Students will use their board money for meals, although additional funds may be necessary. Institutional and federal aid may be applied towards the cost of the USA Study Tour.
Accommodations:
Expect accomodations to vary from youth hostels (in major urban centers) to traditional hotels. Some locations may allow for camping (to be determined at a later date).
