The Land of Fire and Ice

MAY 12-20, 09 (plus mini B course)

The Department of Biology & Geology and the Explorations/Study Abroad Center have teamed up to offer this innovative 8-day tour to Iceland.  Led by Dr. Sabina Thomas and Dr. Chris Stanton, this study tour will investigate the dynamic, multifaceted geology of this unique island nation in the North Atlantic.

Participants in Iceland program will earn 4 semester hours of science and lab credit in GEO 200L-I or BIO 200L-I.  Students will also satisfy one course of International Studies Core Credit.

Whether you are a science major or not, this is an incredible opportunity to explore a geologically active island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.  Participants will study land-forming lava flows, glaciers and everything in between. Learning objectives include:

  • Examine examples of fundamental concepts in geology and learn the theory of plate tectonics.
  • Learn about the biodiversity of Iceland and understand why the flora and fauna is unique.
  • Understand the relationship of sustainability and the resources of Iceland and the world.
  • Discover the relationship between BIO and GEO, in general, and in Iceland.

Iceland is a place of remote villages and modern cities. A place where energy is harnessed from hot springs deep within the earth and grandmothers still knit sweaters on the front porch while the fishing boats return to the harbor.

Eligibility requirements: Eligible participants must have a 3.0 GPA.  Student conduct records must be clear for one-year prior to applying. Final admittance is subject to faculty approval; interviews may be required.

B-W reserves the right to change program details at any time, including costs and itinerary.
