B-W Group Study Tours: Discovering China

wall_of_china.jpgOffered during the 2003 spring semester, the Discovering China program included 10-weeks of intensive, on-campus study of Chinese society, history and current issues, nutririon, health, and physical education. The on-campus portion of the program was to be followed by 4-weeks of travel throughout China, visiting Shanghai, Chongching, Xian, and Beijing.  However, due to the SARS outbreak as well as several other world concerns, the trip itinerary was changed to a more domestic trip.  The groups of students instead traveled to San Francisco to experience the local Chinese culture as well as Honolulu. The trip exposed students to urban and rural environments, presentations by Chinese professors, discussions with Chinese students, and excursions to historical and contempory points of interest such as China Town and the local Historical Societies. Knowledge of the Chinese language is not required.

The program was led by Dr. Judy Krutky, Political Science & International Studies and Christie Shrefler, Assistant Director of Study Abroad.
