The Cleveland Orchestra
Richard Weiss is first assistant principal cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, occupying the GAR Foundation endowed chair. For the entire 2010-11 season, he served as acting principal cellist. Mr. Weiss grew up in Los Angeles County, California. In high school he represented California in the statewide and western regional contests of the Music Teachers National Association competition, and went on to win the national first prize in Miami, Florida. At the Tanglewood Festival, he was the Young Artist contest winner and appeared as concerto soloist. While attending the Eastman School on full merit scholarship, he won a position in the Rochester Philharmonic. During his senior year, he won an audition to join TCO's cello section. With TCO and other orchestras, he has appeared as soloist many times. An active chamber music performer, he is a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Piano Trio.
