Songwriting

Ellen Hansen-Ellis, Instructor
Ages 15 and up; some musical knowledge helpful.

A class for amateur musicians, designed to lead participants through the fundamentals of songwriting: melody, lyrics, accompaniment, and the use of notation software. Basic melody notation, chord symbols and accompaniment options will be covered, as well as simple keyboarding of melodies, common chords and progressions. This combination course of lecture, discussion, and lab work will culminate in at least one professionally notated song that can be shared with friends, family, church congregations, etc. During the final class, students will perform or have the instructor play a finished song in front of the class.

Ellen Hansen-Ellis has a B.M. in Composition from Baldwin-Wallace College, and plays piano and flute. She is a church music director, and also works as an administrative staff member at the B-W Conservatory of Music. She has composed extensively for voice, both solo and choral works, as well as for piano and other instruments.
