Every year you’ll get the opportunity to practice the skills you learn in the classroom. Productions are built from the ground up, on campus and off, at professional theatres such as PlayhouseSquare, Great Lakes Theatre and The Beck Center for the Arts.
Partnerships with Professional Organizations
You benefit directly from our professional relationships. BW Music Theatre co-produces a regional premiere every year with PlayhouseSquare, the second largest performing arts complex in the U.S., and you’re a part of it. Past productions include Brooklyn, [title of show], Lizzie Borden, Passing Strange, Chess, and Love Story. Another vital partner: The Beck Center for the Arts, a powerhouse on Cleveland’s West Shore. Co-productions: Spring Awakening, Next to Normal and Carrie.
Our most ambitious work happens right here at home, in the Kleist Center for Art and Drama. Follies, Rent & La Bohème (staged in repertory for the first time ever), Titanic, The Wild Party, Side Show, and Parade, among many others, are sold-out, high profile events with regional and even national significance, often reviewed by the media. You collaborate with professionals in every aspect of every production.
Cutting Edge Music Theatre - First Takes and The Naked Musical
As much as we love the classics, we love new work. Our partnership with NAMT (The National Alliance for Musical Theatre) gives us First Takes – a showcase of new work by up-and-coming writers and composers. Music selections are NAMT winners, including Breakup Notebook: the Lesbian Musical, Factory Girls, Lizzie, Pregnancy Pact, The Circus in Winter, and The Three Little Pigs. Taking it up a notch is The Naked Musical, a full-length, inventively-staged work of music theatre. Past works include Myths and Hymns, Edges, Ordinary Days and See Rock City. First Takes and The Naked Musical are stripped-down theatre at its best: minimal sets, costumes and a barebones orchestra.
