THE CHEMISTRY MAJOR
All chemistry majors must complete the following curriculum (semester credits):
Required Chemistry Courses
CHM 111, 111L, 112, 112L General Chemistry I and II with lab 9 hrs
CHM 221, 221L Quantitative Analysis with lab 4 hrs
CHM 251, 251L, 252, 252L Organic Chemistry I and II, with lab 9.5 hrs
CHM 463 Chemistry Seminar * ( 4 semesters ) 2 hrs
Other Required Courses
MTH 141, 142 Calculus I and II 8 hrs
PHY 131 & 151L, or 145 General Phys I or Workshop Phys I 5 hrs
PHY 132 & 152L, or 146 General Phys II or Workshop Phys II 5 hrs
TOTAL 42.5 hours
Chemistry Electives – 300 Level all majors must complete 10 credits from the following:
CHM 311, 311L Biochemistry, with lab 4 hrs
CHM 321, 321L Instrumental Analysis, with lab 4 hrs
CHM 331, 331L Physical Chemistry I, with lab 4 hrs
CHM 332, 332L Physical Chemistry II, with lab 4 hrs
CHM 341, 341L Inorganic Chemistry, with lab 4 hrs
CHM 351 Organic Spectroscopy (lab course) 2 hrs
Chemistry Electives – 400 Level: all majors must complete 1 hour from the following:
CHM 411 Topics in Biochemistry 0.5, 1 or 2 hrs
CHM 421 Topics in Analytical Chemistry 0.5, 1 or 2 hrs
CHM 441 Topics in Inorganic Chemistry 0.5, 1 or 2 hrs
CHM 451 Topics in Organic Chemistry 0.5, 1 or 2 hrs
Total minimum semester hours required: 53.5 hours
* A comprehensive seminar must be completed to fulfill graduation requirement. Students seeking teaching certification must achieve a passing grade on the NTE in lieu of the comprehensive seminar.
