Chemistry

Joseph Gorse, Professor

As an analytical chemist I am interested in making chemical measurements and teaching the fundamentals of how chemists answer the questions:  What is it? or How much is there?  Analytical chemistry is part of all chemical research and very important to environmental studies, quality control, quality assurance, forensic studies and even in identifying fakes or forgeries in the world of art.  Of course, analytical chemists are very interested in developing and characterizing new methods of making chemical measurements.  My students and I have most recently synthesized and characterized a unique ion exchange membrane, patented by NASA-Glenn, which can be used to extract heavy metals (e.g. lead) from water.  Tara Hansen (a 2002 graduate) used the ion exchange material to create a selective film on the end of an electrode which could detect metal ions such as lithium or potassium.  Other research interests include solar cell fabrication and capillary electrophoresis.
