The Division of Business Administration at Baldwin-Wallace College will become the educational partner of Glengary Ventures LLC, a Cleveland-based venture capital firm specializing in smaller-cap health care, financial services and industrial enabling projects.
Glengary describes itself as a “venture catalyst enterprise” – a new breed of venture capital organization with an emphasis on community enhancement. It combines investment capital, merchant banking services and a world-class support network; it provides an organized network approach to the investment deploying process while incorporating value-added intellectual capital to accelerate the launch of new enterprises. It targets investments of $5 million and less.
“Our vision is to create fast-moving, profitable, market-leading new enterprises by leveraging the deep traditional strengths of the industrial heartland,” said Thomas Tyrell, Chairman of Glengary Partners and former CEO of Republic Technologies International (RTI). “We combine powerful information technologies and a dynamic network of investment capital and human capital resources.”
Dr. Peter Rea, Chair of the Business Division, said the partnership ties directly to B-W’s practical approach to business education.
“This partnership provides an ideal fit for our academic program, as well as exceptional opportunities for our students and faculty,” he said. While most business curricula focus on large corporations and are based on large-cap case studies, much future business development and growth in the Northeast Ohio will be driven by smaller companies, Rea said.
“Glengary’s focus on smaller-cap start-ups and new-business carve-out initiatives provides a forum for students to learn about the launching of a new venture,” Rea added. “Students will have direct contact with corporate leaders and Glengary investors and be able to observe first-hand the process of venture investment, including operating meetings where investors and managers review progress and overcome obstacles to growth.”
B-W faculty will be available as consultants and candidates for portfolio company advisory boards.
