Wildlife...wild about studying life.
Hands-on learning...learning about hands.

Whichever interests you, biology is a multi-faceted program focusing on the study of life processes and living organisms (human, plant, animal and aquatic).

Interactive
From the nearby Metroparks and Cleveland Zoo to Iceland and beyond, you can be in the neighborhood and across the world. You'll learn with your hands, contemplate with your mind and stretch your imagination by taking the complex and applying it to the real world through independent research studies, field experiences and internships.

Results-driven
Small class sizes, individual attention and faculty mentoring make B-W's biology program ideal for career preparation and/or medical, professional or graduate school. Student successes include presenting at conferences, having papers published and earning coveted national summer research positions.

Greenhouse, gross anatomy and more
Infusing plant cells, inspecting human cadavers and identifying bacteria, you can do research alongside your professors.  Starting at the freshman level, you'll have hands-on access at nine biology labs:

botany/plant  genetics/molecular biology
scanning electron microscopy histology
ecology/evolution physiology
microbiology/immunology anatomy
zoology/invertebrate

View the department's greenhouse and see our plant collection, which was beautifully compiled by Katherine McConnell, B-W '04.   (Note: This will open in a new window.)

Versatile Field
A bachelor's degree in biology can be a stepping-stone to post graduate education or can lead directly to a career.  Biology-related opportunities include:

aquatic biologist  pharmaceutical sales
pharmacist  physician
dentist teacher
ecologist  forensic scientist
nurse  medical technologist
geneticist wildlife biologist
naturalist veterinarian

The Department of Biology and Geology offers biology as a major and minor.  Geology is offered as a minor.

B-W's neuroscience program unifies several disciplines, including biology.
